Lawal returns, as Heartland win

Heartland eked out the narrowest of wins over Bayelsa United at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, but the reigning champions will feel justifiably hard done by at the penalty which brought the Naze Millionaires level.

The story of the weekend however, was the return of former Nigeria midfielder Garba Lawal, who captained Lobi Stars to a 1-0 victory over Wikki Tourists, seeing out all 90 minutes in the process.

Peter Ebimowei headed Bayelsa in front inside the opening quarter hour, but Heartland were awarded an iffy penalty just past the 25 minute mark. The game was the live game of the weekend, and the television replays clearly showed that the ball came off the defender's chest.

Uche Agba showed his gratitude for the early Christmas present by sending Emmanuel Fabiyi the wrong way.

Joshua Obaje claimed a late winner for Heartland, reacting quickest to some confusion in the Bayelsa defence to stroke home from close range.

Lawal's return to competitive football saw him help Lobi to their first win of the season. Victor Baranabas converted a second half penalty to win the Makurdi side all three points.

Kano Pillars, who play Heartland in the CAF Champions League semifinal, came away from the Ilorin cauldron with a 0-0 draw against Kwara United.

Rangers swept to a 2-0 victory over Ranchers Bees and Zamfara United were narrow 1-0 victors over Gateway.

Kaduna United, who have been forced to move their home games to Gusua as a result of work on the Kaduna Township Stadium, will play Sunshine Stars on Monday.
