Ertugral and City part ways

Muhsin Ertugral and Cape Town City have parted ways after the club suffered a 1-0 home loss to Marumo Gallants at the weekend, it was announced on Monday.

A brief statement on social media from City said: “After technical discussions, the club and Muhsin Ertugral have agreed mutually to part ways.

“The decision comes as a collective in the best interest of the club as we look to end the 24/25 season as strong as possible.

“We thank Muhsin for his professional and earnest contribution,” the statement added.

Ertugral had been in charge for 14 matches after the December sacking of Eric Tinkler, but despite a positive start in which he won his first two games against Kaizer Chief and Orlando Pirates, the 65-year-old Turkish-born coach has overseen a run of 10 matches without a win.

The loss to Gallants at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday plunged City to 13th in the Betway Premiership standings and the club are now not only in danger of missing out on a top eight place for the first time in their ninth top-flight season, but are also staring at the possibility of relegation.

Ertugral was supposed to be a stop-gap measure until the end of the season when he would take over as technical director and the Dutch coach Andries Ulderink would come in as coach for the 2025/26 season.

Ulderink quit his job as assistant coach at Glasgow Rangers to begin preparations for the Cape Town City post and visited South Africa last month but has since taken over at Belgian club Royal Antwerp, leaving uncertainty over the identity of the next City coach.
