African players in Europe: Mbeumo, Wissa sting Newcastle
Brentford duo Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored their ninth goals of the Premier League season at the weekend as the Bees stung Newcastle United 4-2 to go ninth.
Cameroon winger Mbeumo and Democratic Republic of Congo forward Wissa are among four Africans within the top seven Premier League scorers.
Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah shares top spot with Erling Haaland on 13 goals and Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson has netted eight times for Chelsea.
Here, AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:
ENGLAND
BRYAN MBEUMO (Brentford)
Mbeumo scored a superb early goal and set up another for Kevin Schade. The winger opened the scoring after picking up the ball on the right, cutting inside and unleashing a fierce left-footed shot. Brentford have the best home record in the English top-flight, with seven wins and a draw from eight matches.
YOANE WISSA (Brentford)
Wissa scored Brentford’s second goal, capitalising on a defensive error before charging forward and picking his spot from just inside the area.
DANGO OUATTARA (Bournemouth)
Burkina Faso forward Ouattara scored a dramatic winner deep in stoppage time as Bournemouth beat relegation-threatened Ipswich 2-1. Ouattara set up fellow substitute Enes Unal to level in the 87th minute and smashed the ball home from close range in the 95th minute.
TARIQ LAMPTEY, YANKUBA MINTEH (Brighton)
Ghana international Lamptey scored a stunning opener for Brighton, who ended up drawing 2-2 with Leicester after squandering a 2-0 lead. The 24-year-old defender curled a shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. Brighton's second goal was scored by Gambia winger Minteh after a superb jinking run.
SPAIN
INAKI WILLIAMS (Athletic Bilbao)
Ghana international Williams helped Athletic beat Villarreal 2-0 by netting their second goal in a comfortable LaLiga win at San Mames. The forward sped in behind the defence and held his nerve, producing a clinical low finish to make the game safe as the Basques moved fourth.
PATHE CISS (Rayo Vallecano)
Senegal midfielder Ciss obtained his first goal of the season to claim a 1-0 win for Rayo at Valencia. The 30-year-old leaped highest at a corner to give the Madrid side an early advantage, which they clung on to.
GERMANY
MOHAMED AMOURA (Wolfsburg)
Amoura impressed again as Wolfsburg continued their recent resurgence by beating Mainz 4-3 at home in a Bundesliga thriller. Amoura's 19th-minute goal, a tap in from a rebound, levelled the score at 1-1. He then returned the favour for Tomas in the second half, swinging in a pass for the Portuguese to score.
FRANCE
MOSES SIMON (Nantes)
The Nigeria winger is one of the most thrilling dribblers in the French game but struggles to deliver on a regular basis for a team fighting at the foot of the table. He did deliver on Sunday, however, scoring a wonderful late goal to give Nantes a vital 1-0 derby win at home to Rennes.
WILFRIED SINGO (Monaco)
Powerful Ivorian defender Singo is capable of popping up with important goals and did just that on Saturday, opening the scoring in Monaco's 2-0 win over Toulouse as the principality club closed to within five points of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
