Sekhukhune narrowly sink Cape Town Spurs

Sekhukhune United kept up their unbeaten run in 2024 in the DStv Premiership as they defeated struggling Cape Town Spurs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening. The result sees Spurs still rooted at the bottom of the league standings.

At the start of the match, Cape Town Spurs were pushing hard and posed a real threat to Sekhukhune’s goal, but as the home team settled into the match, they were able to control the ball better and worked to keep their opponents from scoring.

Nyiko Mobbie came close to opening the scoring for Babina Noko in the first half but his effort was saved by Zama Dlamini between the sticks, who had replaced regular starter Neil Boshoff.

Both of the teams looked likely to score, but were not able to utilise their set-piece chances well and their runs forward were not timed correctly, leading to a number of offside calls.

With their positive start, the Urban Warriors produced one shot on target in the first half but with Sekhukhune’s dominance later on, the scoreline was goalless at the end of the first half.

Babina Noko’s persistence would eventually pay off in the 52nd minute, as Asekho Tiwani broke the deadlock with a wonder goal that will surely live on in his memory.

Coach Ernst Middendorp’s men’s frustration continued as they could not find the end product to significantly challenge the home side. Their defence was set up well, with Sekhukhune boss Lehlohonolo Seema's back-three tactics proving hard to beat.

By the time there were 20 minutes left on the clock, both coaches had used up all five of their substitutions and had to make do with what they had on the pitch.

Keagan Buchanan would try to produce opportunities with a bit of creativity after coming off the bench with dangerous balls, but nothing came to fruition for Spurs. The match ended 1-0, which was another dent in the team’s hopes of escaping automatic relegation.

An impressive defensive display from Babina Noko ensured that they walked away with all three points and the Urban Warriors’ woes seemed to continue as they picked up a fourth defeat in succession.
