National Elephants power past Scorpions
Guinea walked away with a 1-0 victory against Gambia in their Group C encounter at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday evening at the Stade Charles Konan Bank de Yamoussoukro.
Guinea started off the match on a strong note and dominated possession in the first half and had more shots on goal. Guinea also had higher passing accuracy in the beginning stages.
Leading up to the match, Guinea pulled a rabbit out of their hat as they salvaged a point against powerhouses Cameroon in their opener. This was done despite going down to ten men.
Both teams tried to break the deadlock and 20 minutes went by with no team creating any chances that could beat the goalless tie.By the 30th minute, Guinea made a play to almost score but the ball passed along as they failed to capitalise on their chances.
Guinea made attacking efforts but hit the upright as their frustrations grew in their efforts to go ahead in the Group C match.
Guinea finally broke the deadlock when Aguibou Camara took advantage of a defensive error and made the score 1-0 in the 70th minute. After the cooling break, Guinea sent charges to close out the final part of the match.
Gambia's Yankubah Minteh made an effort to equalise but the goal was ultimately disallowed in the 81st minute due to an offside ruling.
Ultimately, Guinea continued to dominate the match and walked away with all three points in the Group C match-up, leaving them in second place in their group.
