Chama stars as Young Africans crush nine-man Vital'O
Zambian Clatous Chama starred as Young Africans of Tanzania punished ill-disciplined Vital'O of Burundi by winning a CAF Champions League first round qualifier 6-0 on Saturday.
A red card reduced Vital'O to 10 men before Ivorian Pacome Zouzoua converted a 14th-minute penalty to break the second leg deadlock in Dar es Salaam.
Popularly known as Yanga, the home team had stretched their lead to four goals through Clement Mzize, Chama and Zimbabwean Prince Dube before the Burundians had another player sent off.
Down to nine men, Vital'O conceded further goals to Burkina Faso star Stephane Aziz Ki and Yahya Mudathir before the final whistle.
Apart from scoring, Chama created four goals as Young Africans completed a 10-0 aggregate victory, having built a four-goal advantage last weekend in the first leg.
It is the biggest overall winning margin of the 14 completed ties with another 13 second legs scheduled for Sunday.
Young Africans reached the Champions League quarterfinals last season and Argentine coach Miguel Gamondi believes his team can go even further in this campaign.
The Tanzanian outfit will face another east African opponent, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, in the final qualifying round next month with one of 16 group places up for grabs.
Although held 1-1 at home by Villa, a Ugandan club competing in the Champions League for the first time since 2005, Bank advanced 3-2 on aggregate.
Ethiopian Suleman Hamid netted after 64 minutes and Ugandan Patrick Kakande restored second-leg parity with 12 minutes of regular time remaining.
REMATCHES
AZAM, the other contenders from Tanzania, were eliminated after losing 2-0 to APR of Rwanda in Kigali, where Jean Bosco Ruboneka and Gilbert Mugisha scored to secure a 2-1 overall victory.
APR now face Pyramids, an Egyptian club who walloped them 6-1 in the second round in Cairo last season after a goalless first leg.
Pyramids, hoping to become the fourth Egyptian winners of the Champions League after Al Ahly, Zamalek and Ismaily, followed up a 6-0 rout of JKU of Zanzibar with a 3-1 second leg win.
There will be another second round rematch from last season after Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana edged African Stars of Namibia 1-0 to set up a clash with Orlando Pirates of South Africa.
Omaatla Kebatho scored the only goal of the return match for Galaxy to cancel a 1-0 first leg loss and the home side won 6-5 on penalties.
Galaxy shocked Pirates last season and their South African coach, Morena Ramoreboli, will hope to embarrass the Soweto outfit again.
Other clubs to advance on Saturday included three-time African champions Raja Casablanca of Morocco and 1966 title-holders Stade Abidjan of the Ivory Coast.
