Potential candidates to replace Mabedi at Flames

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach and captain Patrick Mabedi was sacked as Malawi coach on Tuesday.

Mabedi's exit from the Flames job midway into his two-year contract came after five consecutive defeats.

The former Black Leopards assistant coach's misfortune could open a window of opportunity for some well-known figures.

After all, the Flames travel to Burundi for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying dead-rubber on 15 November.

Malawi FA has since hinted on hiring a caretaker coach while waiting for a permanent handler.

SuperSport.com has scanned Malawi football fraternity for possible candidates to fill the void created by Mabedi's axing.

THABO SENONG

Senong arrived in Malawi a fortnight ago to pick up a lucrative role as Fifa talent development coach for Luwinga Inclusive Academy.

Malawi FA might be tempted to entrust the Flames in the able hands of the former Sekhukhune United assistant coach temporarily.

Senong is no stranger to senior national team football. He was in charge of Lesotho and has been part of Bafana Bafana set up.

KALISTO PASUWA

The Zimbabwean has always been linked with the Flames job. However, the man who was once considered a potential Chiefs prospect, insists he is happy with his current job at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

Pasuwa has bossed Malawi football after winning five consecutive TNM Super League titles.

PETER MPONDA

The former Leopards coach and skipper has been a revelation this TNM Super League season. He has steered Silver Strikers to the league summit where they sit seven points clear with six games remaining.

JOHN MADUKA

The PSL legend is in charge of Royal AM and continues to prove himself. The ex-Blomfontein Celtic captain hasn't been associated with football in his fatherland since 2005 when he retired from the Flames.

Maduka is a loyal servant, hence chances of him leaving Royal AM are slim. However, in football, never say never.

MCDONALD MTETEMERA

The former Flames defender is unknown beyond Malawi football borders. However, he proved himself last season with lowly Chitipa United who finished in the top-four.

Mtetemera has not replicated his heroics at new club Crerk Sporting Club where he is suspended due to poor results.

FAM might find him a more convenient temporary option.
