Atalanta's Serie A fixture with Fiorentina, which was postponed in March when their opponents' general manager Giuseppe "Joe" Barone fell ill, and later died, was rescheduled on Friday for 2 June.

Serie A have decided to schedule the match, which was supposed to be played on 17 March 17, for 6pm local time on the Sunday of the weekend after the end of the season.

The rescheduling of the match had caused a headache for Serie A as both clubs have reached European finals and had deep runs in the Italian Cup, leaving little room in the calendar for their extra league fixture.

Atalanta face Juventus in this year's domestic cup final next Wednesday.

The fixture's new date means that Champions League placings may not be confirmed until after the scheduled final weekend of the season as Atalanta are firmly in the mix for a top five finish even though they have a game in hand.

Atalanta are fifth and in Serie A's final Champions League position, separated from sixth-placed Roma by goal difference with those two clubs facing off in Bergamo on Sunday.

Barone, who was born in Sicily in 1966 but moved to New York City when he was a child, died a day before his 58th birthday and two days after being taking ill in Bergamo.

He was a long-time colleague of Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso and had been a key part of the club hierarchy since the change of ownership in 2019.
