CURRENT FORM
Ivory Coast have been drawn alongside Mozambique, Cameroon and Gabon in Group F as they look to accumulate their fourth AFCON crown this time around. The popular footballing nation claimed the last AFCON title on home soil after they recorded a 2-1 win against Nigeria in the final.
In preparation for the AFCON, The Elephants featured in two friendly matches during November where they jotted down a 1-0 loss to Saudi Arabia, as well as a 2-0 win over Oman.
Os Mambas likewise partook in two friendly ties last month, in results that include a 1-0 defeat against AFCON host nation Morocco and also, a 2-2 stalemate with Chad.
While Ivory Coast boast a rich history in the tournament, Mozambique have never progressed beyond the group stages in their five appearances at the finals.
WHAT WAS SAID
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae boldly expressed that his side will not make up the numbers at the tournament and will aim to bag yet another Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.
“We’re going to Morocco to be strong. We have a very close-knit group," Fae said.
"The players call us that they are ready and that they have the same objective as the technical staff. They are motivated to win the AFCON and bring back the 4th star.
"We go to win. There is no additional pressure. We will fight and wet the jersey to go as far as possible."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ivory Coast: Amad Diallo – Despite an indifferent campaign with Manchester United, Amad Diallo remains one of The Elephants most deadly attacking options. With his direct running and skill, Diallo will be a focal point of Ivory Coast's attack at the tournament.
Mozambique: Geny Catamo – Much like that of Diallo, Ivory Coast will have to keep a keen eye on Catamo’s constant attacking threat. Also, the Sporting Lison star’s versatility at wing and wingback makes him a good option in different match scenarios.
