BETWAY PREMIERSHIP WRAP: Amakhosi leave it late, City stutter
Kaizer Chiefs were the big winners during the opening round of 2024/25 Betway Premiership fixtures, following their 2-1 victory over Marumo Gallants at the Free State Stadium on Saturday, while Royal AM and Cape Town City shared the spoils in a tense draw in Pietermaritzburg.
In what was one of the most keenly anticipated fixtures this weekend, Mohamed Nasreddine Nabi commenced his reign with the Glamour Boys on a positive note.
After conceding in the eighth minute of the match, Chiefs stuck together and eventually levelled matters through Mduduzi Shabalala in the 17th minute.
The perfect start for Nabi 💯

Then, following a well-constructed passing move en-route to goal in the 79th minute, Mfundo Vilakazi’s classy left-footed strike on the edge of the area separated the two sides on the day.
Elsewhere, Cape Town City travelled to the Harry Gwala Stadium for their first league assignment of the season and recorded a 1-1 draw with Royal AM in the process.
Following a fiery start to the game, City took the lead through Prins Tjiueza in the eighth minute but were unable to hold onto their advantage during the closing stages of the match.
Then, in a moment that angered the City technical team, Motebang Sera’s 84th-minute strike saw the two sides settle for a point in their first Betway Premiership encounter.
On Sunday, Brandon Truter and his side were made to work hard for their three points in a 1-0 win against TS Galaxy at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

In typical Truter fashion, the Natal Rich Boyz looked defensively sound throughout the encounter, especially after Keegan Allan’s 22nd minute opener.
