The Dutch club are making their fifth appearance at the stage – and only their second in 17 seasons – and are bidding to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006/07.

Dortmund are in the round of 16 for the ninth time overall and the fifth in six seasons – although three of their most recent four last-16 ties ended in elimination.

While PSV finished second behind Arsenal in Group B in this season's group stage, Dortmund came top of a competitive Group F ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle United.

MATCH FACTS

PSV and Borussia Dortmund haven’t faced in Europe since the 2002-03 Uefa Champions League first group phase – Dortmund won 3-1 at the Philips Stadion before a 1-1 draw at Signal Iduna Park.

This is PSV’s first Uefa Champions League knockout game against a German side, losing eight of 12 games against German teams in the group stages (W3 D1). Borussia Dortmund’s only previous knockout tie with a Dutch team came in the 1995-96 quarterfinal, losing 3-0 on aggregate against eventual losing finalists Ajax.

Borussia Dortmund have only lost one of their last four away games against Dutch opposition in the Uefa Champions League (W2 D1), although that one defeat did come on their most recent such trip – 0-4 v Ajax in a group stage game in October 2021.

This will be PSV’s first game in the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League since the 2015-16 campaign, when they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Atlético de Madrid. The Dutch side’s last victory in the knockout stages of the competition came back in February 2007, beating Arsenal 1-0 at home (also in the round of 16).

Borussia Dortmund have lost eight of their last nine away games in the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League (W1), although their one victory in this run did come under current manager Edin Terzic – 3-2 at Sevilla in the round of 16 in 2020-21.

PSV are unbeaten in their last five games in the Uefa Champions League (W2 D3), and could equal their longest run without defeat in the competition – previously six unbeaten between October 1997 and September 1998.

Borussia Dortmund have won their last two Uefa Champions League away games, beating Newcastle 1-0 and Milan 3-1 in the group stage. They last won three consecutive away games in the competition under the same manager in the 2013-14 season, in a run of three under Jürgen Klopp.

Karim Adeyemi has scored in each of his last two Uefa Champions League appearances for Borussia Dortmund (two goals), with Jude Bellingham in October 2022 the last player to net in three consecutive games for the club in the competition (a run of four).

Johan Bakayoko has created the most open play chances and completed the most dribbles of any PSV player in the Uefa Champions League this season (15 each). In fact, he was the only player in this year’s group stage to create 15+ open play chances and complete 15+ dribbles.

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has made 62 line-breaking passes under pressure in the Uefa Champions League this season, which was the second-most of any centre back during the group stage (after Josko Gvardiol, 64)
