Top 10 signings across the Betway Premiership

League action gets underway in mid-September, and the transfer window only closes at the same time, but there is not expected to be much more activity in the final fortnight with most clubs having done their transfer business.

SuperSport.com runs an eye over the market place and highlights the top 10 signings for the coming Betway Premiership season.

Sanele Barns (Stellenbosch): The right-sided Richards Bay midfielder was the top performer for Richards Bay in a tough last season , where they kept their top flight status only after the end of season promotion-relegation playoffs. Stellenbosch moved swiftly to secure his signature, penning a pre-contract with the 27-year-old in January.

Andile Jali (Chippa United): Jali has not played any competitive football since December 23 last year, leaving Moroka Swallows in the wake of their financial meltdown. At 34-years-old, he is past his best, and has a reputation for ill-discipline, but could revel in a senior figure role at Chippa United and will provide a young squad with plenty of experience.

Kegan Johannes (Mamelodi Sundowns): SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt feels Johannes could mature into a commanding central midfielder given his physical capacity but he has made his name to date as a right back, and will put pressure on Khuliso Mudau for a place in the starting line-up once the 23-year-old recovers from his pre-season surgery.

Kamohelo Mokotjo (Cape Town City): Cape Town City have been in need of a defensive midfielder to shield their back three, or sometimes back four, and the 33-year-old former Bafana international fits the bill. His time playing in the Netherlands, England and in the United States makes him a valued addition to any squad.

Thabang Monare (Sekhukhune United): The hard tackling midfielder was in the Bafana Bafana squad at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast at the start of the year but then allowed to leave Orlando Pirates at the end of his contract. Given he turns 35 in September that was not a surprise but this is a player with much to offer, if he keeps injury free.

Gift Motupa (Magesi): Stuck down the pecking order at Mamelodi Sundowns, Motupa has wasted several years of a promising career. But now he is expected to be a regular option for the newly promoted Magesi and will surely be hungry for game time and regular action. His goalscoring acumen could shine again.

Keenan Phillips (Lamontville Golden Arrows): The 24-year-old left Swallows in mid-season when they did not pay his salary and was hoping to secure a move to Major League Soccer in North America. But when that did not happen, he has turned to Arrows to revive his career and should quickly again remind what a promising right back he is.

Iqraam Rayners (Mamelodi Sundowns): Rayners’ last transfer to Gauteng with SuperSport United was an unhappy one and he thrived when he returned to Stellenbosch 18 months ago. The lessons he has learnt from the two experiences will surely stand him in good stead as he challenges Peter Shalulile for the lead striking role.

Gaston Sirino (Kaizer Chiefs): Sirino blew the good will he enjoyed at Sundowns when he spent a season sulking over the club’s refusal to sell him to Al Ahly and when his mind returned back to focus, found it hard to get a place in the team. But he should be a starter at Chiefs and look to restore lost lustre in AmaKhosi colours.

Dean van Rooyen (Orlando Pirates): Right back was a troublesome position for Pirates last season, mainly because of injuries, and Van Rooyen can expected to be in contention for a place in the team when the league starts. He is cup tied for the MTN8 so can only make his debut on September 18 when Pirates host Chippa in their league opener.
