Polokwane City will hope to arrest the worst run of form in the club’s history when they host Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership on Sunday.

City have now lost eight in a row in all competitions, their last victory a 3-1 success over SuperSport United on September 21.

Those eight defeats in a row have yielded just six goals for and 17 against – including a bizarre 5-3 loss to Cape Town City in early November – and seen City spiraling from the top of the league to just above the relegation zine.

City have never had such a poor run of results, including in their previous incarnation as Bay United, who featured in the 2008/09 Absa Premiership season.

They did go on a run of seven defeats in eight games, with one draw, between August and October 2014, that run broken by a surprise 2-0 win at BidVest Wits.

They then went on a seven-game unbeaten run that included five victories and two draws.

The same thing happened between February and March 2014, when they lost seven in eight, but managed a win against Orlando Pirates in between.

After the Maritzburg game, their final match in 2019 will be at away to Mamelodi Sundowns on December 21.
