Kaizer Chiefs’ 3-0 win over Cape Town City on Sunday afternoon was the headline result of the Absa Premiership’s weekend action, with the Soweto giants surging nine points clear at the top of the log.

The Amakhosi triumphed thanks to a trio of headed goals from Leonardo Castro, Samir Nurkovic and Eric Mathoho, with the result opening up a nine-point lead over nearest chasers Mamelodi Sundowns. City, meanwhile, drop to 13th on the log and are just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Bloemfontein Celtic moved into fifth place with a 4-2 home win over Black Leopards at the Dr Molemela Stadium. Phunya Sele Sele were inspired by a brace from Victor Letsoalo, while Lidoda Duvha only avoided dropping to the bottom of the log on goal difference.

SuperSport United moved to within a point of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns with a 2-0 win at AmaZulu (who are 14th and, like Cape Town City, just one point above the danger zone). Evans Rusike and Bradley Grobler netted the goals for Matsatsantsa.

Saturday’s action saw key wins in their fight against relegation for Baroka FC (1-0 at home to derby rivals Polokwane City) and Stellenbosch (4-1 away to Highlands Park), while Chippa United and Maritzburg United played out a goalless stalemate.

The Absa Premiership will continue on Wednesday 15 January with two fixtures: Orlando Pirates hosting Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic visiting Bidvest Wits.
