Mamelodi Sundowns could be without Uruguayan forward Mauricio Affonso for another four months as his crippling injury battles continue to the frustration of co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

Sundowns signed Affonso 18 months ago and the tall forward made a positive initial impact, but has managed just 13 appearances, during which he has scored six goals.

A succession of different injuries have left him sidelined though and just when it seems as though he is ready to return, he breaks down again.

"Affonso is still out, we will be not really sure when he is coming back because he always breaks down when we are hoping that he is coming back," Mngqithi said.

"We are beginning to live with the fact that maybe he must recover fully and be ready to help us when he is ready.

“We believe that maybe in the next two to three months, if not four months, but it's a tough one for us."

Affonso last played for The Brazilians in a CAF Champions League win over Wydad Casablanca in February 2020.

Sundowns are able to at least call on the services of Affonso’s compatriot Gaston Sirino though after he returned to full training following his failed move to Al Ahly.

Sirino has noted played since October but appears to have accepted that he needs to continue his career at Chloorkop.

Sundowns are in action on Tuesday when they play Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy in the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie. Sundowns lead 2-0 from the first leg.
