Quartet of teams sound an early warning at Elements

Western Province and Central Gauteng sounded an early warning on the opening day of the 2021 SA Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Tournament, while North West and Mpumalanga dominated the promotion battle from the get-go at Elements Private Golf Reserve.

 

A-SECTION

Western Province and Central Gauteng both came through the first round matches unscathed, while defending champions Gauteng North also made a pretty strong start.

Province had the most productive day, collecting 4 points and 18.5 game points

The 2016 champions enjoyed clean sweeps in both morning foursomes, and a very strong showing in the singles saw Province route Free State 9 – 3 and KwaZulu-Natal 9.5 – 2.5. Roux Burger, Pietie Loubser, Gerlou Roux and Elton James was unbeaten in both matches.

Central Gauteng made an equally strong start against Ekurhuleni to win 9.5 – 2.5, but the Lions had to dig deep to route Gauteng North.

Square after the foursomes, David Ryan won 3 & 1 and Dylan Keylock 6 & 4, but Louis Moolman kept Gauteng North in the hunt. Clive Palm gained point no 5, and Logan Lofstedt secured the winning point when he beat Armand van Graan,

Jacques van Tonder squared the final game against Central Gauteng No 1 Derek Scullard with a birdie on 16, but Scullard matched him shot for shot coming home to halve the game.

Gauteng North and Free State didn’t leave empty-handed. The 2019 champions beat Ekurhuleni 9 – 3, while Free State defeated KwaZulu-Natal 8 – 4.

Eastern Province, the B-Section winners at Royal King David Mowbray in 2019, enjoyed a first day bye and will go head-to-head with Gauteng North and Free State on Tuesday. Ekurhuleni face Western Province, while Central Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal will have day of leisure.

B-SECTION

North West and Mpumalanga made the perfect start on the opening day, going two-for-two to bank the maximum points.

North West beat Northern Cape 9 – 3 and Southern Cape 6.5 – 5.5, while Mpumalanga had a slightly tougher time getting past Boland (6.5 – 5.5) and the host union Limpopo (7.5 – 4.5).

Taking a 3 – 1 lead into the singles against Northern Cape, Meleko Patric Maichotlo immediately put North West on the attack, winning 3 & 1 at No 8. Gerrie Badenhorst (6 & 5), Wessel Louwrens (6 & 4) and Christo Peens (5 & 3) reeled in 3 more points.

Halves from George Wolhuter and Johan Krugel left North West in full control. Skipper Douglas Mc Cabe beat Northern Cape No 1 Darryn van Zyl 3 & 2 to seal the deal. Lourens, Peens and Mc Cabe also racked up the points against Southern Cape after the two teams tied the foursomes, and Maichotlo, Nic Weber and Krugel halved their games to secure the win.

North West shot to the No 1 spot in the log with 15.5 game points ahead of Mpumalanga, who amassed 14.

Southern Cape and Boland are third and fourth respectively in the standings after Southern Cape won 8 – 4 against Northern Cape and Boland ran out Limpopo 7.5 – 4.5.

The log leaders will enjoy a second-round bye, while Border will join the action in a three-way clash with Limpopo and Southern Cape and Boland take on Northern Cape.
