France claim 15th gold at Paris 2024, take tally to 57

France have completed their most successful Olympics in over a century after they retained their men's volleyball title to give the host nation a 15th gold medal for a tally of 57 at the Paris Games on Friday.

The French delegation have now amassed 20 more medals than at the Atlanta Games in 1996 when they grabbed 37, including 15 golds.

Their best tally dated back from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when they finished 43 times on the podium.

In 1900, only 26 nations were competing and some sports only featured French athletes, who won a total of 102 medals, including 27 golds.
