City hold on to key winger Gonzalez

Second-placed Cape Town City have been boosted in their bid for CAF Champions League football next season with the news that key Venezuelan winger Darwin Gonzalez has signed a two-year contract extension.
The 29-year-old has been among the top performers at the club since his arrival in January 2022, and has extended his stay in Cape Town to continue working under coach Eric Tinkler.

“Darwin has been a very important player for us since his arrival. A lot of assists, he's scored a number of goals, we are very happy to have him here for another two seasons,” Tinkler said.
The left-winger has scored eight goals in 52 starts in all competitions since his arrival at the club.
City are currently in second place in the DStv Premiership, nine points behind runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns having also played two games more.
The league title may be beyond them, but second place, and a return to the Champions League, is very much on the cards as they resume their season with a home clash against what could be an ‘unknown’ Moroka Swallows on Tuesday given the squad changes at The Birds.
City are level on points with third-placed SuperSport United having played the same number of games, and three ahead of Stellenbosch FC, who have a game in hand.
They will have a good run of home matches in the second half of the season having played only six in front of their home fans to date to go with 10 on the road.
