DAY 4: Dragons and Lions share spoils at JB Marks Oval

Dominic Hendricks and Wihan Lubbe, the captains of the Renault Potchefstroom North-West Dragons and the DP World Lions, shook hands moments before the tea break on day four of their CSA 4-Day Series match at the JB Marks Oval as the game was declared a draw.

The Dragons won the toss, elected to bat first, and scored 425 for six declared in the first innings. The Lions replied with a score of 399 for nine declared. The home side then mounted an unbroken 136-run opening stand that lasted until tea. A total of 289.3 overs out of the possible 360 overs were bowled in the match. Many overs were lost to inclement weather, either bad light or rain.

The Dragons registered a first-innings score of 426 for six declated thanks to a brilliant innings from Raynard van Tonder. The middle-order batsman was at his best as he worked his way to 120 off 221 deliveries. This was the eighth first-class century for Van Tonder. This is the 26-year-old's maiden first-class century for the Dragons. It was also his first overall since November 2022.

The Proteas batter was part of two brilliant partnerships, the first was with his captain, Wihan Lubbe (85). The pair shared a 149-run fourth-wicket partnership. This was the second time in two innings that they have constructed a substantial partnership for the Dragons. Lubbe chalked his 14th first-class half-century during their partnership. This was also Lubbe's second half-century in consecutive innings. Then he shared a 90-run partnership with Taheer Isaacs (59*) that helped swell the Dragons' total.

The Lions stuttered for most of their innings, losing wickets at regular intervals. However, their innings held firm thanks to half-centuries from Joshua Richards (75) and Wiaan Mulder (56). The duo laid the foundation for Bjorn Fortuin and Connor Esterhuizen's 192-run seventh-wicket partnership. Esterhuizen was the foil to Fortuin's positive approach as he patiently worked his way to his maiden first-class half-century, which took him 94 balls to register. Esterhuizen was dismissed for a career-best 83 off 130 deliveries.

FORTUIN STARS FOR LIONS

Fortuin was the star of the Lions' innings with a magnificent 120 off 140. He faced 115 deliveries for his seventh first-class century. This is his second century in two weeks. The 30-year-old is enjoying a couple of fruitful weeks with the bat. Last week, Fortuin scored an imperious 96-ball 116 as he singlehandedly laid the foundation for the Lions' victory over the Multiply Titans.

Matthew Kleinveldt (76*) and Janneman Malan (55*) batted for the Dragons until the match was declared a draw. They shared an unbroken 136-run opening stand. This was Malan's second half-century in the match, after scoring 63 in the first innings. He faced 138 balls to register his 17th first-class half-century. Kleinveldt's half-century was his 35th. The former WSB Western Province player faced 138 balls to reach the milestone.

Ruan de Swardt was the best bowler in the match. The Dragons all-rounder bagged his second first-class five-wicket haul. He bowled in a single innings and finished the match with five wickets for 67 runs in 26 overs. Tshepo Moreki was the pick of the bowlers for the Lions with 3-69 in 21 overs.
