DAY 4: Dolphins and Boland share spoils at Kingsmead

Clyde Fortuin and Sarel Erwee shook hands after the CSA 4-Day Series contest between Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Goldrush Boland at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead was declared a draw.

The two captains shook hands at tea after both sides determined that no other result was possible with only a session left in the match.

The teams had only three days of play after they lost the first day to inclement weather.

This is Boland's second draw in consecutive matches and the Dolphins' second draw in three games.

The draw lifts them to fourth and fifth place respectively.

Boland won the toss, elected to bat first and registered a first-innings total of 38107d.

The home side scored 319 runs in reply.

Boland then scored 156 runs in their second innings. There was no possibility that the Dolphins could chase the total in a session or that Boland could bowl them out.

MASTERFUL KAPLAN

Gavin Kaplan scored a masterful unbeaten 122 off 231 deliveries as he shepherded his side to the total.

When he arrived at the crease, Boland were on 81-1 thanks to a brisk 50 by Blayde Capell.

The 27-year-old raced to a 39-ball half-century. This was Capell's 13th first-class half-ton and second 50 of the season.

Capell, who moved to Boland from South Western Districts this season, made his red ball debut as a concussion substitute after Grant Roelofsen retired hurt against the Knights.

Capell made the best of that opportunity by scoring 57 off 99 deliveries.

Kaplan shared an outstanding 144-run second-wicket partnership with Pieter Malan.

Malan was the second Boland batter to reach 50 in the innings. The 35-year-old faced 108 deliveries to reach his 56th first-class half-century.

This is Malan's second score of more than 50 runs this season. He was dismissed for 83 off 196 balls.

The Dolphins' top-order was not as clinical as their opponents'.

FIFTIES FOR DITHOLE, VILJOEN AND SUBRAYEN

Only one batter from their top five, Tshepang Dithole, reached double figures.

The 31-year-old wicketkeeper stroked a fluent half-century. He faced 59 deliveries on his way to a 13th first-class half-ton. He was dismissed for a 68-ball 51.

Hanu Viljoen and Prenelan Subrayen complemented Dithole's efforts with brilliant half-centuries that kept the home side in the contest.

Viljoen made his red-ball debut for the Dolphins in style.

The 23-year-old moved to the KwaZulu Natal team from Northern Cape Heat earlier this year.

He announced himself to the four-day team with a wonderful 85 from 195. He faced 124 deliveries to reach his fourth first-class half-century.

It is his maiden Division One 50.

Viljoen shared a match-saving 147-run seventh-wicket partnership with Subrayen.

For his part, Subrayen scored an outstanding 82 off 88 balls.

This is his sixth first-class half-century. He faced 50 deliveries to register the milestone.

ANOTHER FIVE-WICKET HAUL FOR STUURMAN

His partner was unbeaten on 46. The Dolphins couldn't reach Boland's total thanks to some good bowling from Glenton Stuurman.

The 32-year-old pacer registered his 16th first-class five-wicket haul in the match.

He took five wickets for 59 runs in 16.5 overs.

Stuurman registered the best bowling figures in an innings in the contest.

Prenelan Subrayen took six wickets across two innings for the Dolphins and was the best bowler in the match. He finished with six for 111 runs in 51 overs.
