The world rally championship is going a shade of green with the sport's ruling body the FIA announcing on Wednesday cars will use only sustainable fuel from 2022.

The "fossil-free hydrocarbon-based fuel with a blend of synthetic and bio-fuel components will be the first of its kind used in an FIA world championship series which includes Formula One.

"By introducing sustainable fuel along with the hybrid technology...we are taking a significant step towards the new era of the FIA World Rally Championship in 2022," said FIA president Jean Todt.

The three official teams currently competing in WRC - Hyundai, M-Sport (Ford) and Toyota - have extended their contracts until 2024 to cover the switch to hybrid cars.

The fuel is produced by P1 Racing Fuels in Ireland which has been awarded a three-year contract.
