The Springbok Sevens side will fight it out for third place after going down 29-7 to Fiji in the semifinals of the Hamilton Sevens in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Fiji and the USA, the two leaders in the HSBC World Series competition, will contest the final as the Cup competition heads towards a close.

The Blitzboks earlier disposed of Samoa in the quarterfinals, winning 28-19 but were no match for Fiji’s pace and power and will be disappointed in their own performance.

The two finalists are set to extend their lead at the top, with the Blitzboks facing off with New Zealand for third place at 8.10am (CAT, GMT+2). Given their fifth place on the log, they will need a win if they are to keep pace with the two leading teams this year.

Aminiasi Tuimaba scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Vilimoni Botitu, Waisea Nacuqu and Kalione Nasoko as the Fijians scored five tries to Selvyn Davids score to dominate the semifinal.

In the other semifinal USA beat New Zealand 17-7.

Earlier the Blitzboks beat Samoa to advance to the semifinal, scoring four tries to three to beat a tough Samoan side.

Chris Dry, Werner Kok, Dewald Human and Davids all scored as they survived an onslaught from the Samoans to head into the semis.
