The Blitzboks ended their first day at the Dubai Sevens II on a high note, downing Great Britain 21-7 in their final pool game to win Pool A and move into the quarterfinals.

The Blitzboks will face Kenya in their quarterfinal on Saturday after the other African side ended as the best third placed finisher to sneak into the playoffs.

But after a day where they beat Japan 48-0 and Ireland 21-12 in their other two pool games, the final game was a lot more physical, but was won once again by the superior breakdown skills of the Blitzboks.

Their hard running style also caused problems for Great Britain and Zane Davids was a constant headache, featuring twice in the opening move that saw him eventually round it off to score and open the scoring.

Shilton van Wyk added another first-half try before Great Britain hit back with a late try on the halftime whistle through Alex Davis.

The second half was a real arm wrestle and often the breakdown penalties were confusing, but the Blitzboks kept on hammering on defence and finally were rewarded, with Ronald Brown showing a turn of pace to run in untouched past three defenders for a great try.

The biggest surprise of the day was Olympic champions Fiji not making the quarterfinals, after they suffered a shock 33-19 loss to Spain.

Spain didn’t qualify either though, with France and Argentina the two sides who qualified.

7:44am Australia v Ireland
8:06am Argentina v Great Britain
8.28am USA v France
8:50am South Africa v Kenya.
