The Blitzboks opened up their Dubai Sevens II campaign in rampaging style, smashing Japan 48-0 in their opening game.

Eight tries, scored by eight different players saw the Blitzboks romp home in a game where they were never really troubled by Japan.

The Blitzboks scored through Impi Visser in the first minute, and saw JC Pretorius, Shilton van Wyk and Siviwe Soyizwapi all add their names to the scoresheet before halftime.

The Pretorius try was bizarre in that Selwyn Davids got caught with the ball and held up by 4 Japanese players, who wrestled with him for more than a minute and couldn’t dislodge the ball. Sevens laws say that the player either needs to put his knee on the ground for it to constitute being a tackle, or the player needs to be bundled into touch before the ref can intervene.

Eventually Davids got his knee to ground, the ball was recycled and Pretorius went over in the corner.

Davids and his namesake Zain both scored early in the second half, with Ronald Brown catching the defence napping on the blindside for a late try and Shaun Williams completing the rout.

The Blitzboks will now face Ireland at 13.04 (CAT, GMT+2) in their second game. Great Britain just pipped the Irish 24-21 in their opening game.
