The Blitzboks opened their Sydney 7s campaign with a clinical, workmanlike 31-5 win over felAfrican side Kenya on Friday.

The South Africans looked all focused as they ran up a 21-0 halftime lead and added to their scoreline easily in the second, exploiting the mistakes that Kenya made.

After failing to make it past the quarterfinals in Hamilton, and losing playmaker Selvyn Davids in the process, the Blitzboks will be hoping for a better performance in Sydney and at least made the best possible start.

Try-scoring machine Shilton van Wyk opened the scoring with a brace - the first being an inside pass to send him up the middle and the second a perfect pass finding him in space to run in and score.

Then it was Shaun Williams who broke through to score before the break and put the Blitzboks into a comfortable position going into the second half.

James Murphy added his name to the scoresheet early in the second half before Kenya finally got themselves onto the board through Kevin Wekesa.

Captain Siviwe Soyizwapi finished off the game with a late try close to fulltime, but may have injured his shoulder in the process.

The Blitzboks face Uruguay in the early hours of Saturday morning, with the game kicking off at 00.44 and then will face last weekend’s runners-up New Zealand at 06.49 on Saturday morning to complete their pool fixtures.
