FULL TIME! ENGLAND 27-10 ARGENTINA. A quite magnificent display of 14-man rugby and playing against the odds. England were magnificent, but Argentina put plenty of effort in but were too indisciplined at times and gave away baskets of penalties. Brilliant kicking by Ford, but Argentina will rue not being able to take advantage of the 14 men of England. We've only just finished day two of this World Cup, but already we've witnessed some crackers. Much more to come tomorrow and over the next few weeks…and thanks for enjoy the action with us.
CONVERSION, ARGENTINA, CARRERAS! 27-10; The conversion was pretty straight-forward, unlike the rest of this match, but it's too little far too late for Argentina.
TRY, ARGENTINA, BRUNI! 27-8; Bruni finally is bundled over the line, despite the attentions of two England defenders. The first try of the match and some small consolation for Argentina.
Argentina have another go running at the England defence… they're held up but run the phases… three… four… five… the slide to the blindside and storm into the 22 but are brought down… the ninth phase sees them run wide, but the 15 men can't seem to find the gaps in the 14…
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 27-3; Ford slots it with ease and leaves the field (substituted) to huge applause.
The sides exchange kicks four times… until England win another penalty, this time on the Argentine 22m again to the right of the poles. Just nothing is going right for the light blues (and white stripes).
NOOOOO! Argentina penalised for leaving the lineout early. What a waste of possession.
England penalised in the scrum and Argentina have the penalty, and they will have the lineout throw 7 metres short of the England 22. They have to make this the moving minute now or it's a gonner…
England clear with a free-kick, and Argentina collect and drive forward, but England pull them to ground and win the scrum.
No try, and England drop out from the tryline, the ball flying to the halfway line where Argentina drive forward but are brought to ground near the England 10m.
Argentina get things together and drive into the England 22 and push over the line, but the ball looks to have been held up… TMO going to confirm… but that looked like some actual rugby from Argentina!
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 24-3; Ford slots it from the Argentine 22, 12 metres to the right of the posts. Keep an eye out for a white towel being thrown onto the field from anywhere near the Argentine dugout…
England win the throw and look to drive over the line, but Argentina are blown again… and they have a man down. England are not following the script Argentina prepared for them. This is the rugby of champions!
Another penalty for England… Ford lines up for a touch-finder… and he nails it about a metre-and-two-toes short of the corner flag - perfection of punting. Give that man the Player of the Match gong right away.
The players take a drinks break.
This time Ford must have been looking for that extra distance cos he pulled it 7 metres to the left of the posts… but it's eaten time and Argentina need to score three times still.
And AGAIN Argentina are penalised, this time for not releasing on the halfway line… and yes, Ford is lining up another kick. What are Argentina doing here? They should be running England ragged!
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 21-3; Ford struck it well but it looked for a second like it was going to veer to the left… but it held its line and snaked inside the far upright. England are truly bossing Argentina!
Argentina again blown for a foul… and Ford will go for poles from just inside the 10m line and 12 metres in from touch…
England keep pushing at Argentina, giving the men from the Pampas little chance to plot their next attack…
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 18-3; Ford slots it without a sweat, from the halfway linea few metres to the left… he curls it over and through to give his side a three-score lead with just 26 minutes left.
Argentina run from their lineout, then switch back and run to the right wing, but the 14 men of England seem to be blocking them every which way they twist and turn… and the ref blows for an England penalty on the 10m line and, as expected, Ford points to the posts!
Argentina forced back into their own half, they kick clear but England kick back at them, only for Carreras to claim the mark and clear the danger up to the England 22.
Argentina penalised in the scrum, and England clear the danger down to the Argentine 10m with a lovely kick.
Argentina scrum on the England 10m… the backline poised for a devastating run… but Chocobares fumbles the ball and England will scrum on their 22.
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 15-3; Ford extends the lead with a penalty inside the 22 just to the right of the posts. Looking easy for the 14 men of England at the moment…
England holding the ball up on the halfway line for almost 30 seconds… then the ball is lofted in the Argentine half, but the catch is knocked forward and England have the ball.
From the lineout, Argentina break with Gonzalez, but England halt the attack and win the scrum on the halfway line.
KICK-OFF! We're underway with the second half in Marseille!
HALF TIME, ENGLAND 12-3 ARGENTINA. Superb play from England, despite being down to 14 men for almost the entire half. Argentina have played the stronger rugby, but England have been strong in defence and have cleverly manipulated the play to maximise their potential… and the three drop-goals were brilliant, inspired and - come on, say it again! - BRILLIANT! It's up to Argentina to pull something special out of their halftime talk, especially as England run the risk of tiring… so it's stacking up to be one hell of second half battle! And we'll have all the action for you live in just a few minutes.
England have the scrum on the halfway line… and Mitchell sucks it out of the back of the scrum and chips it out of play for the half-time whistle.
Argentina looking to run the ball from the halfway line, but they lose it forward and England look to counter, but they are held up and the ref blows play back…
DROP-GOAL, ENGLAND, FORD! 12-3; Superb play and tactics from England, maximising the opportunities to literally chip away at building a lead. Very smart rugby from the 14 men from Eng-er-land!
England push forward and imto the Argentine 22, win a lineout, win the ball… George peels off the maul, but Argentina are standing firm… but Ford is standing waiting for the pass from Mitchell…
Argentina look to hit back and drive hard theough the England defence, through the 10m and on the edge of the 22… they run it wide, then the ball is fed back to the openside, England tackling well… Carreras tries a drop from the halfway line… but it slimks off to the left of the posts. England 22m dropout.
DROP-GOAL, ENGLAND, FORD! 9-3; The ball is fed out the back of a ruck to Ford, on the halfway line… and he drops it to his foot, strikes it like a concert pianist hitting his stride, and the ball flies high and handsome through the posts from the halfway line! SENSATIONAL!
IT'S MAGIC IN MARSEILLE!!!!!!!!!!
Argentina penalised for holding shirts on the ground. Daly takes the penalty from 58m out but he strikes it a good few metres wide, and I'm not sure it had the legs to have passed over the crossbar.
DROP-GOAL, ENGLAND, FORD! 6-3; Superb technique and strike from Ford, inside his 10m line and in front of poles. Wonderful rugby from England.
Argentina now with a quick release down the line, but they get run into touch just short of their 10m.
England run the line, ruck… Mitchell lofts one from the back of the scrum… but it's too long and the mark is made in the Argentine 22.
Argentina duck and dip and dive trying to weave through the tight England defence under the poles, but they're blown up for holding on the ground and England clear the danger from the penalty. England throw just past their 10m…
Argentina's throw, they claim the ball and the forwards drive through the openside, England hold them initially but they push forward again and slide over and dot the ball down… but the referee has asked for confirmation of am England knock-on… and it's granted, so Argentina have a penalty… 5m line… and they're gong to make a maneuver…
… BUT ARGENTINA steal the ball away, run the line and the ball is kicked perfectly deep into the England 22, and we'll have a lineout on the 22… straight after the water break!
England claim the ball from the kick, run the line, Argentina bring them to ground, but England recycle the ball and keep trying to drive forward… past the halfway line now…
Argentina force England back to their half, England hoist another ball in the 22 where the mark is taken… and with that the ref recalls Carreras, who has dodged the red card upgrade.
England win the ball, run the line to the right wing, with a grubber into touch putting Argentina on the defence, but with the throw.
England penalised for pushing too early in the scrum, so Argentina have the penalty… it's lofted into the England 22 but the mark is claimed and the kick soars down past the England 10m line.
The sides trade raking kicks, with England ending up with the advantage of a scrum just short of the halfway line.
England drive forward and win a lineout on the Argentine 10m line.
RED CARD, ENGLAND, FORD! Massive moment, as Ford's yellow card has been upgraded to red. It was effectively an innocent coming together, and after being bandaged the two players shook hands to acknowledge no malice… but following the laws (which are designed for player safety) Ford did enter the tackle to early which put the Argentine in greater danger. A sad moment for the match and for Ford.
PENALTY, ENGLAND, FORD! 3-3; The Englishman slots his penalty and the sides are equal.
YELLOW CARD, ARGENTINA, CARRERAS.
England drive forward into Argentina's 22, but the South Americans clear the danger… but they giveaway a penalty almost immediately after Carreras crashes into Ford as he tries to charge down the Englishman's up and under.
Carreras has another shot at goal, this time from a couple of metres inside his own half… he connects beautifully, but his efforts scrapes past the right upright.
PENALTY, ARGENTINA, CARRERAS! 0-3; The flyhalf slots his kick beautifully.
YELLOW CARD, ENGLAND, CURRY. England down to 14 men and Argentina have a kick at posts from, the halfway line, 15m in from touch. Juan Cruz Mallia and Tom Curry were the players who clashed heads, but the Englishman made contact before Mallia had landed on the turf, but only just. Will it be upgraded to a red card?
Ref asks the TMO to check what happened in the clash…
… England claim the ball and counter-attack, the ball going into touch… but the referee calls play back as there was a clash of heads and there blood in Argentina and England!
Argentina win the ball and run their line, first right and now left… a high ball is lofted to the English 22, England claim it, go into a ruck… and it's cleared from the base of the ruck… now Argentina run the ball…
Argentina kick deep and England kick the ball into touch just short of their 10m line.

Argentina's Rugby World Cup credentials pale in comparison to that of England – or of other own football side (Argentina have won the Football World Cup on three occasions).
England won the Cup in 2003 and were losing finalists in 1991, 2007 and 2019. In 1995 they lost in the semi-final (remember a chap called Jonah Lomu?!), and ended up in fourth place, after losing the third place playoff to a strong French side.
England have made it to the quarter-final stage in eight of their nine World Cup. The only time they failed to progress beyond the group stages was in 2015, ironically when they hosted the tournament. England won just two of their four matches, losing to Australia and Wales, both of whom went through to the quarter-final ahead of England.
The two teams have met 25 times in international competition, with England winning 19 and Argentina just five, with one match ending in a draw. The accumulated scoreline in these 25 matches is 677-403 in favour of England.
