Rangers ended St. Mirren's unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership to finish a woeful week on a high with a 3-0 away win on Sunday.

A double from captain James Tavernier and Abdallah Sima's strike made St. Mirren pay for Ryan Strain's early red card and edged the Glasgow giants above their opponents into second, seven points adrift of leaders Celtic.

Former Gers midfielder Steven Davis again took temporary charge after the sacking of Michael Beale.

Davis oversaw an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Aris Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday, but got back to winning ways thanks in large part to a moment of madness from Strain.

Neither side had come close to breaking the deadlock before the Australian handled a cross to the back post to deny Sima a clear sight of goal.

After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded and Strain sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Tavernier has been singled out for criticism in a dreadful start to the season for Rangers, but remains deadly from the spot and fired home his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors then struggled to make their man advantage count for over 40 minutes.

However, Sima is the one of an array of attackers signed by Beale in the transfer window who has shown signs of promise.

The Senegalese swept home his seventh goal of the season from Nicolas Raskin's pass 20 minutes from time.

Tavernier then sealed the points in style with a thunderous strike into the top corner on the half-volley in stoppage time.
