Spivac gets revenge on Tybura

Serghei Spivac got his revenge over Marcin Tybura with a first-round submission win in the heavyweight main event of a UFC Fight Night at the APEX Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the morning of Sunday 11 August 2024.

After Tybura scored a unanimous decision triumph in this pair’s first meeting in early 2020, Spivac was able to get the ‘W’ this time with an armbar submission just 104 seconds into the match – the first such submission in the heavyweight division since Fabricio Werdum tapped out Alexander Gustafsson four years ago.

“I trained this a lot. To be honest, I was quite nervous because I couldn't train for the last few weeks due to injury," Spivac said via an interpreter in his post-fight interview.

The Moldovan moves to 17-4 and has called for a fight against higher-ranking opponents. Tybura was No 8 coming into this clash.

The rest of the main card saw catchweight wins for Chepe Mariscal over Damon Jackson (149.5 lb, unanimous decision) and Danny Barlow over Nikolay Veretennikov (171.25 lb, split decision), Chris Gutierrez got the better of Quang Le in the bantamweight division, Yana Santos outpointed Chelsea Chandler in a women’s catchweight (141 lb) bout, and Toshiomi Kazama submitted Charalampos Grigoriou in the bantamweight opener.

Next week brings UFC 305 from the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, headlined by a match for the middleweight championship between Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya.
