Magesi, AmaTuks stay neck and neck
Magesi FC and University of Pretoria have remained neck and neck at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after Round 23 action this weekend.
AmaTuks leapfrogged to the top of the log on Friday when they secured a 1-0 away win over Casric Stars, courtesy of an injury time penalty from veteran Samuel Julies, but Magesi reclaimed pole position on Saturday afternoon when they defeated third-placed Orbit College at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium thanks to goals from Wonderboy Makhubu and Motsie Matima.
Saturday also saw wins for Platinum City Rovers (1-0 at home to Venda FC), Hungry Lions (2-1 at home to NB La Masia) and Milford FC – with the latter thrashing Upington City 3-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium thanks to strikes from Mvelo Zikakayo and Menzi Chili (who was later sent off), as well as an own goal.
Lions’ win pushed them into the top five of the standings, while Milford moved out of the relegation zone and Platinum dropped into it.
Sunday saw Limpopo rivals Black Leopards and Baroka FC played out a 0-0 draw, JDR Stars struck deep in injury time to defeat Marumo Gallants 1-0 away from home and keep them rooted to the bottom of the log, and Maritzburg United outclassed Pretoria Callies 2-0 in Tshwane to be placed seventh on the standings.
The MFC will continue with a full round of fixtures on the midweek of Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April.
