Aubameyang was already a star goal-scorer when he joined Arsenal midway through the 2017/18 season, having been prolific in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and revered as one of the best in Europe. He certainly did not disappoint following his reported £56-million transfer.

The Gabon international forward scored 10 Premier League goals in his first 13 games following his January arrival, then ended the 2018/19 season as the joint leading scorer with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah as the trio each netted 22 times.

He followed that up with another 22 goals the following season, finishing one behind Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy in the race for the leading scorer prize.

He was certainly a man for the big occasion, scoring important goals for The Gunners against top opponents, and was handed the Arsenal captaincy when Granit Xhaka gave an angry reaction to being booed by his own fans.

He was the quickest to 50 goals for Arsenal in the Premier League era, taking just 79 appearances, four quicker than the great Thierry Henry. It was the sixth fastest among all Premier League clubs.

Aubameyang scored the winning goal for Arsenal in the 2020 FA Cup final, becoming the first African captain of a side to lift the coveted trophy.

He gradually fell out of favour with manager Mikel Arteta, who cited disciplinary issues, and left The Emirates for Barcelona in February 2022.

He was back in the Premier League at the start of the 2022/23 season having signed for Chelsea, though he has found game-time hard to come by under manager Graham Potter.
