Another of the Ivorian Golden Generation who came through ASEC Abidjan, Kalou signed for Dutch side Feyenoord in 2003 and later moved to Chelsea for a reported fee of £9-million.

Just 20 at the time, he admitted later he took a camera to his first training session to take a picture with the club’s top stars as he could not believe he would be rubbing shoulders with them!

But he soon settled in and earned immediate praise from coach Jose Mourinho for his work ethic and versatility, and became a regular for the side.

He won the FA Cup and League Cup in his first season with the club, and would go on to claim the former on four occasions in a trophy-laden stay at Stamford Bridge that also included the UEFA Champions League title in 2011/12.

His only Premier League trophy came in the 2009/10 season as he made a major contribution, but arguably his best campaign was the following year when he netted 10 league goals in his 31 appearances.

Despite playing in both the FA Cup and Champions League finals in 2012, Chelsea did not renew his contract at the end of the season and he left for Lille in France, before later playing in Germany, Brazil and most recently Djibouti.

In all he scored 36 Premier League goals to go with 23 assists in his 156 appearances.
