Running alone, in the same lane 6, with the same athletes comprised in the Saturday heat and in the same order of line-up, the quartet of Shaun Maswanganyi, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana and Akani Simbine went on to clock 38.64 in their time trial, missing it by 0.30 and did not qualify for the final that will be held in the afternoon.
The successfull appeal for reinstatement followed an accidental collision between the Italian and South African teams in heat 2, and on appeal the Referee decided to offer South Africa an additional opportunity to qualify for the final.
South Africa needed to run 38.34 or better, to become the 9th team in the final and would have run in lane 1, which would not have affected the 8 teams that had already qualified.
Had South Africa finished their race despite the collision, they would have been placed directly in the final after a successfull appeal.
The Rainbow Nation is now left with only the 4x400m men's team to contest for a medal on Sunday (today).
SA schedule of competition on Day 9, SA time:
1.25pm – 4x400m relay men, final.
