World 10,000m champion Letesenbet Gidey believes she's capable of beating the world women's marathon record when she makes her debut over the distance on the fast streets of Valencia on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Ethiopian already holds world records in the 5 000m, 10 000m and the half-marathon, the latter set in Valencia in October 2021.

"I'm happy to be in Valencia. It's always gone well for me here," Marca newspaper cited the athlete as saying.

"I'm pleased with my training, I'd be happy to beat the record and I think I'm capable of it," she said, with Kenya's Brigid Kosgei, the current holder, having clocked 2hr 14min 04sec in Chicago in 2019.

Gidey's compatriot Tamirat Tola, the world champion, is among the favourites for the men's race.
