David Morrell retains WBA Regular super middleweight belt

WBA “regular” super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr won on a 12th-round knockout against previously unbeaten challenger Aidos Yerbossynuly on Saturday night at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Morrell was in control from the opening round showing good defence as he dominated the gutsy, previously unbeaten Yerbossynuly.

The champion scored a knockdown in the last round with the challenger beating the count.

However, soon afterwards, with another barrage of punches, Morrell sent Yerbossynuly down again to finish him off.

The time was 2:34.

Morrell improved his record to 8-0; 7 and Yerbossynuly’s record dropped to 16-1; 11.

UNDERCARD

In what was considered an upset, the late substitute Brian “La Bala” Mendoza (21-2; 15) won on a knockout against former unified world champion Jeison “Banana” Rosario (23-4-1; 17) in a middleweight contest.

Mendoza scored a knockdown in the second round with a shot to the body and finished the fight with a right uppercut in the fifth round.

Time was 35 seconds.

In a middleweight bout Fiodor Czerkaszyn (21-0; 13) won on a unanimous ten round points decision against Nathaniel Gallimore (22-6-1; 17).

The scores were 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93.

Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell (29-3; 18), at 39 years of age, won on a tenth-round technical knockout over Yunieski Gonzalez (21-4; 17) in a light heavyweight bout. The time was 1:30.

Former unified junior middleweight champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams (28-3-1; 16) won on an eight-round unanimous points decision against Rolando Mansilla (18-12-1; 8) in a middleweight bout.

Mansilla was deducted a point in the fifth round for continually losing his mouthpiece.

The scores were 80-81, 79-72, 79-72.

SHAVKATDZHON RAKHIMOV WINS IBF JNR LIGHTWEIGHT BELT

Junior lightweight Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov (17-0-1; 14) came from behind to score a ninth-round knockout over Zelfa Barrett (28-2; 16) to claim the vacant IBF belt at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Saturday night.

Barrett scored a knockdown in the third round but Rakhimov came back to drop Barrett twice in round nine to finish it. Time was 2:35.

DMITRY BIVOL RETAINS WBA LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT BELT(/strong>

WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (21-0; 11) retained his belt on wide margins over 12 rounds against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (44-1; 30) on Saturday night at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The counter punching Bivol, throwing combinations throughout, dominated in most of the rounds to win with scores of 118-110 and 117-111 twice.

UNDERCARDOlympic gold medallist Galal Yafai (3-0; 2) retained the WBC International flyweight title on a ten-round split decision against Gohan Rodriguez (12-2-1).

The scores were 96-94 and 96-95 for Yafai and 96-95 for Rodriguez.

In a junior welterweight bout John Lawrence Ordonio (8-4-1; 4) won on points over four rounds against Majid Al Naqbi (7-1; 4).

Having his first fight since losing his WBA junior bantamweight belt Kal Yafai (27-1; 15) battled to beat journeyman Jerald Paclar (16-6-3; 9), winning on a ten-round unanimous points decision. The scores were 96-93, 96-93, 95-94.

Lightweight Campbell Hatton (9-0; 3) stopped Denis Bartos (9-6; 6) at 1:44 of the first round.

CHANTELLE CAMERON NOW UNDISPUTED CHAMPION

In a bout for the undisputed female junior welterweight belt Chantelle “Il Capo” Cameron (17-0,;8) outscored undisputed welterweight champ Jessica “Caskilla” McCaskill (12-3; 5) over ten rounds on Saturday night at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

McCaskill dropped down in weight in an attempt to secure the junior welterweight belt. Cameron retained her IBF and WBC belts and added the vacant WBA and WBO belts to reach undisputed status.

ANTONIO MORAN WINS AGAINST KENDO CASTARIEDA

Antonio “Toño” Moran (29-5-1; 20) won the final of the ProBox TV’s 140lb “Last Chance” tournament with a tenth-round technical knockout win over Kendo Castañeda (19-6; 9) on Friday night at the ProBox Events Centre in Plant City, Florida.

The time was 1:28.

In a lightweight bout Miguel “Explosivo” Madueno (28-1; 26) won on a fifth-round knockout over WBO Latino champion Juan “El Olympico” Huertas (16-4; 12).

The time was 2:15.

In a clash of unbeaten junior lightweights, Ezequiel Borrero (6-0; 2) scored a six-round unanimous points decision over Carlos Rosario (5-1; 3).

Junior lightweight Dominic Valle (6-0; 4) won on points over six rounds against Jose Meza (8-8; 2).
