Gervonta Davis defends his WBA secondary lightweight belt against Rolando Romero, and on the same card, Erislandy Lara defends the WBA secondary middleweight belt against Gary O’Sullivan, at the Barclays Arena in New York on Saturday night.
The tournament will be shown live on SS Grandstand from 3–7am on Sunday morning.
The 27-year-old Davis (26-0; 24), who fights from the southpaw stance, won the belt when he stopped Yuriorkis Gamboa on a 12th-round stoppage in 2019. Romero has a record of 14-0; 12.
Davis also holds the WBA (regular) junior welterweight belt which will not be on the line.
He has scored impressive inside-the-distance victories against Leo Santa Cruz and Mario Barrios.
Romero, 26, who is listed at No 1 by the WBA, has not fought at the same level as the champion.
Davis is far more experienced than Romero and with a 92 per cent knockout ratio, the odds are that he will win inside the distance.
George Kambosos Jnr holds the WBA “super” belt and the WBO, IBF and WBC lightweight belts. Devin Haney is the IBF champion.
In the co-main event, Erislandy Lara (28-3-3; 16), also a southpaw, defends his WBA secondary middleweight belt against the No 10-rated 37-year-old Gary O’Sullivan (31-4; 21) from Ireland.
O’Sullivan was knocked out in the first round by David Lemieux in 2018 and in 2020 lost on an 11th-round stoppage against Jaime Munguia.
The odds favour the champion, who could win inside the distance.
