Western Province tailender Beuran Hendricks struck the winning runs for the second consecutive match, but it was the two youngsters Mihlali Mpongwana and Daniel Smith that played a pivotal role in the home team securing a three-wicket victory over the Warriors in their One-Day Cup clash at Six Gun Grill Newlands.
Mpongwana (61* not out) and Smith (50) both struck half-centuries as the duo shared a 78-run partnership for the sixth-wicket after WP had slumped to 44/5 in pursuit of the 174-run target.
Mpongwana, in particular, showed an excellent temperament to guide WP over the line after Smith was dismissed with 51 runs still required for victory.
Both players had begun cautiously before growing in confidence as their innings progressed. Smith, who was making his WP List A debut, benefitted from a dropped chance on just six when Akhona Mnyaka let one burst through his hands on mid-on.
The dropped chance proved costly in this low-scoring game which was dominated by the bowlers.
WP's top-order had followed the pattern set by the Warriors earlier in the day when they too were reduced to 95/6.
Like Smith, Warriors debutant Tiaan van Vuuren rescued the visitors with a gutsy 47 from No 8 after Tristan Stubbs (33) and Sinethemba Qeshile (31) had begun the rebuilding job.
Van Vuuren actually enjoyed a fantastic all-round performance with a bowling haul of 3/35 that maintained the pressure on WP after Glenton Stuurman had clean bowled Richard Levi with the first ball of the innings.
Yaseen Vallie (3), Tony de Zorzi (14), Gavin Kaplan (19) and George Linde (0) followed as the Warriors looked on course for an upset until Mpongwana and Smith were joined at the crease that ensured Tshepo Moreki's (4/44) earlier in the afternoon did not go to waste.
Western Province now have two victories from their three matches, while the Warriors remain the only winless team in the competition.
