Virat Kohli passed 500 runs for the ninth time in a season as Royal Challengers Bengaluru inflicted a sixth consecutive defeat on the Punjab Kings in their Tata IPL match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday afternoon.
The table-topping Royal Challengers posted a formidable 222-4 and the brilliant Bhuvneshwar Kumar reduced the run-chase to 19-3 in the fourth over removing openers Priyansh Arya (0) and Prabhsimran Singh (2) caught at midwicket and slip respectively.
Punjab recovered to 62-3 before Cooper Connolly (37) was caught at deep midwicket and a requirement of over 12 runs per over for the last dozen proved well beyond them as they subsided to 199-7 to lose by 23-runs with Bhuvneshwar claiming 2-38 and ‘impact substitute’ Rasikh Salam 3-36.

Impact substitute Marcus Stoinis (37) mounted a late charge before countryman Josh Hazlewood (4-0-36-1) trapped him lbw with a full toss and Shashank Singh belted a fighting 56 from just 27 balls (4x4, 4x6) but 40 were required from the final two overs and it was too high a mountain for the home side to climb.
Thirty-seven-year-old veteran Kohli was yet again in vintage form with 58 from 37 balls with four legside sixes and three fours but his anchoring innings would have been in vain without the power-hitting from Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David which saw Punjab’s bowlers concede over 200 for the ninth time in 13 games.
Just another day at the office 🤷♂️

Venkatesh Iyer held everything together with a classy, unbeaten 73 from 40 balls (8x4, 4x6) while Padikkal crashed 45 from only 25 balls with four fours and three sixes.

Big-hitting Australian, David, was in his element with just a couple of overs remaining and landed a pair of fours and straight sixes in his 28 not out from just a dozen deliveries.
It was a painful day for most of the Punjab attack with Kiwi fast bowler Lockie Ferguson (3-0-43-0) and experienced wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (3-0-42-1) both conceding over 14 per over while left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar claimed a tidy 2-35 from his four overs.
Punjab won six of their first seven matches before losing the next six and, having dropped allrounder Marco Jansen in a desperate bid to rediscover some form, are now in serious danger of missing the playoffs after leading the log for the first five weeks.
The Royal Challengers are now two points clear at the top of the log and guaranteed a place in the top four.
Victory in their final group match will guarantee a coveted place in the top two.
