The SA Emerging Women delivered a dominant performance in the second T20 against Bangladesh Emerging, sealing a seven-wicket victory at Chatsworth Oval in Durban on Sunday.
The Women’s Day triumph handed the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
A clinical bowling display, led by Caitlin Wyngaard’s figures of 2-13, saw Bangladesh restricted to 75-8 in their 20 overs before Faye Tunnicliffe continued her fine run of form with an unbeaten 41 off 29 balls, guiding the hosts over the line with 6.4 overs to spare.
South Africa lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, but it quickly proved to be a good toss to lose as the home attack asserted itself from the outset.
Wyngaard (2-13) struck with the very first ball of the match before a run out and a wicket for Nthabiseng Nini (1/7) reduced the visitors to 20-3 at the end of the powerplay.
Mosammat Eva (19) and Afia Era (12) briefly steadied the innings, taking Bangladesh to 41-3 before Seshnie Naidu (1-18) made the breakthrough in the ninth over.
That dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse as Nondumiso Shangase (1-13), Alexandra Candler (1-9) and Wyngaard all struck, while a second run out left Bangladesh reeling on 56-8 after 14 overs.
A spirited 20-run ninth-wicket partnership between Disha Biswas (12*) and Sabikun Jesmin (5*) helped Bangladesh reach 75-8 at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
Requiring 76 runs to win and secure the series victory, South Africa faced early resistance from Bangladesh as Habiba Pinky (1-10) and Biswas (1-19) made early inroads, dismissing Yasmeen Khan (0) and Candler (6) before the hosts moved to 27-2 after six overs.
With Tunnicliffe having walked to the crease at three, the in-form batter teamed up with Miané Smit (4) to add 31 runs for the fourth wicket and get South Africa’s chase back on track before Jannatul Sumona (1-16) broke the stand by having Smit caught in the eighth over.
The SA Emerging Women then made the chase look a straightforward one as youngster Simone Lourens (22*) joined Tunnicliffe out in the middle, with the pair combining for a match-winning 39 runs to complete the chase and confirm a series victory with a game to spare.
The third and final T20 will take place on Tuesday, 11 August at 1pm and will be streamed live on Cricket South Africa’s YouTube channel.
