WSB Western Province got their first win in the CSA 1Day Cup on the fourth attempt, sealing a three‑wicket win over neighbours Goldrush Boland in sweltering Cape Town on Wednesday.
And boy did they do it the hard way, despite bowling out their guests for 185 and at one stage cruising at 122-1 in their chase of 186.
Twin half-centuries from David Bedingham (53 off 55 balls) and Jiveshan Pillay (54 off 73) looked set to secure a bonus point.
But the chase nearly stalled as wickets fell. They eventually relied on the guiding hand of the unbeaten Kyle Verreynne (26 off 46) to squeak them over the line with 31 balls to spare.
Nandre Burger, who finished with 4‑30, had earlier roasted the Boland top order with three early wickets.
Having won the toss and opted to bat, the visitors melted to 22-4 as the mercury pushed beyond 40 degrees Celsius in Cape Town.
Jhedli van Briesies led the fightback with 59 off 86 balls, but it was something of a lone cause, with his team leaving 17 balls unused on a draining afternoon at the foot of Table Mountain.
Pillay and Bedingham ticked along to settle any nerves after Valentine Kitime fell early, reaching 50 in the 13th over before notching their half‑century partnership soon after.
Bedingham in particular was beginning to purr, dispatching Akhona Mnyaka for a brace of imposing boundaries.
He breezed to his half‑century, with the home side also passing the 100 mark and in cruise control.

Pillay joined him on the personal landmark, as well as bringing up the 100 partnership in emphatic fashion, cracking three boundaries off a Ferisco Adams over.

Ethan Cunningham (3‑21) was introduced to the attack and forced the breakthrough when he had the well‑set Pillay caught behind to make it 122-2.
Bedingham followed when he toe‑ended Imran Manack to Grant Roelofsen at deep point, with captain Daniel Smith following him when he feathered one from Cunningham.
Then it was Mihlali Mpongwana, hampered by injury, as the irrepressible Cunningham trapped him LBW.
Verreynne and Sinalo Gobeni nudged their way to within 21 runs of their target before the latter was bowled off an inside edge by Mnyaka.
He then cleaned up Kyle Simmonds on the first ball, leaving the hosts seven down and himself on a hat‑trick ball, which he sprayed well wide of Beuran Hendricks’s off stump.
It was a valiant comeback with the ball, but the task was too steep as Verreynne kept his cool under the lights, with Hendricks clonking the winning boundary.
BURGER SIZZLES IN THE HEAT
Earlier, Burger bowled the bewildered Roelofsen around his legs for a golden duck with the second ball of the match.
And one became two when he tempted Cunningham into a waft outside off stump.
Blayde Capell picked off a pair of boundaries across a lightning outfield in an attempt to kick‑start the innings, but he became Burger’s third victim when nudged behind to keeper Verreynne.
Then went Lehan Botha, losing his off stump to Dane Paterson for five, leaving his side staring down the barrel.
Clyde Fortuin established a platform of sorts, but his 53‑ball effort came to an end with 26 to his name when he fell edging to slip off the wily left‑arm spin of Simmonds.
Adams injected some life into the innings only to depart for 21 when he swatted Mpongwana to Gobeni at square leg.
Van Briesies helped them limp to three figures in the 32nd over and followed Adams in targeting Mpongwana, striking back‑to‑back boundaries in flamboyant fashion.
Belligerent support from Manack helped build the momentum, and Van Briesies went to his half‑century off 78 balls with a nudged single.
In launching the first ball from the returning Burger into the stands, he brought up the 50 partnership off just 45 deliveries.
Van Briesies was in control until he dabbed into the onside and set off for a ludicrous single, was rightly sent back by Manack, and saw his wicket broken from six yards short of his ground.
Manack's demise followed soon after, clean bowled by Burger for 24 as the innings wilted to its sub‑par conclusion.
Goldrush Boland 169/9 (45).
