The Chennai Super Kings coasted to a comfortable eight-wicket victory against a disappointing Mumbai Indians in their Tata IPL match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday night.
The win completes the double for CSK over Mumbai and enables them to move up to sixth place in the table while Mumbai languish down the ladder with just four points, mathematically still alive but with little hope of making the playoffs.
Mumbai won the toss and batted first in front of Chennai’s passionate Yellow Army, but they were unable to make the most of a good start from Ryan Rickleton (36), Naman Dhir (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (21) that took the visitors to 90-2 at the halfway mark.
Rickelton smashed five sixes in the powerplay, looking good after his unbeaten hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but he succumbed in the seventh over, sweeping spinner Noor Ahmad straight to deep square leg.
Thereafter some disciplined bowling from Ahmad (2-26), paceman Jamie Overton (1-23) and particularly Anshul Kamboj (3-32) halted their momentum as wickets fell regularly as Mumbai limped to a below-par 159 for seven.

With such a low total to negotiate, Chennai didn’t need to take chances in their run chase with their skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 67 in 48 balls (5x4s, 2x6s).
It was his second successive half-century and his 23rd in this competition to date. He and Kartik Sharma, who struck 54, added an unbroken 98 in 75 balls for the third wicket as the home team clinically cruised to victory with 11 balls to spare.

The ease of the win was all the more satisfying for Chennai as it was the first time they had won a match this season after their inspirational opener, Sanju Samson, was dismissed in the power play.
Samson, who has already struck two centuries, was caught behind by Rickelton off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah for 11 in the second over.
