Captain Shubman Gill led the Gujarat Titans to a commanding 77-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals with an innings of breathtaking authority in the 52nd match of the Tata Indian Premier League at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur Saturday.
Gill was simply unstoppable — stroking an imperious 84 off just 44 balls, laced with nine fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 190.90, systematically dismantling every bowler the Royals threw at him. Jofra Archer was taken apart — 46 runs bled from three wicketless overs — and Tushar Deshpande and Brijesh Sharma fared little better as Gill marshalled the Titans' innings with a captain's masterful blend of power and precision.
Supported by a composed 55 from Sai Sudharsan (36 balls, 6x4, 2x6), a blistering 37 not out off 20 balls from Washington Sundar, and a typically savage late cameo of 14 not out off just 4 balls from Rahul Tewatia — including two sixes in the 19th over — the Titans amassed a formidable 229 for four from their 20 overs after being sent in to bat first. The Royals, chasing 230, never came close — bowled out for a meagre 152 in 16.3 overs as the Titans' bowling unit proved every bit as ruthless as their batters.
South Africa's Kagiso Rabada was the spark that lit the Royals' funeral pyre. Operating with pace, bounce, and menace, KG ripped through the top order — removing a dangerous 15-year old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a breathless 36 off 16 balls (3x4, 3x6) and then sending back skipper Yashasvi Jaiswal for just three, leaving the Royals reeling at 40 for two inside four overs. Rabada finished with 2-33 from 3 overs — economical and lethal when it mattered most.
Mohammed Siraj chipped in with a vital early wicket too, and then Afghanistan's Rashid Khan took centre stage in devastating fashion — ripping through the middle order with 4-33 from 4 overs, snaring Dhruv Jurel, Donovan Ferreira (4), Shubham Dubey (15), and Ravindra Jadeja in a spell of wrist-spin wizardry that left the Royals without hope or answer. Jason Holder then completed the demolition with 3-12 from 2.3 overs, finishing off the tail with clinical efficiency to seal a comprehensive Titans triumph.
The Royals' run-chase never gained any sustained momentum — despite a feisty 38 from Jadeja and Jurel's punchy 24 off 10 balls — and they ultimately fell 77 runs short in what was a decisive Titans statement of intent. With this victory, the Gujarat Titans go level on points with table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad. Gill led from the front, the batting depth was exposed in layers, and a bowling attack featuring Rabada's raw pace, Rashid's guile, and Holder's late incisions proved far too complete for the Royals on the night.
