Laura Wolvaardt and Karabo Meso scored big before Annerie Dercksen registered her maiden five-wicket haul to steer South Africa Women to an emphatic 80-run win over Zimbabwe Women in their T20I contest at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Tuesday afternoon.
Wolvaardt called correctly at the toss, chose to bat first, and shepherded her team to 200 for one in 20 overs. Her bowlers then rallied behind Dercksen as they bundled the hosts out for 120 runs in 19.3 overs.
Wolvaardt marked her return to form by registering a new career-best T20I total. The South African captain, who went for 13 T20Is without a milestone, broke the streak with an unbeaten 126 from 62 deliveries (16x4s, 4x6s). She outdid her previous best of 115. The South African captain showed her destructive side by pummelling 26 runs off her opposite number, Nomvelo Sibanda, in the 16th over.
Wolvaardt shared a sensational unbroken 173-run second-wicket partnership with Karabo Meso, who recorded her maiden T20I half-century. The 18-year-old faced 50 deliveries to get to the milestone. She finished the innings with her unbeaten 50 from 51 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter was circumspect through the early parts of her innings. The teenager played with minimal risk and was happy to give the strike to her captain. The pair joined forces in the third over.
Annerie Dercksen complemented the duo's brilliant effort by claiming three early wickets to deny Zimbabwe any momentum. Her first two came in the powerplay and the other in the seventh. She rounded things off with another two scalps at the death. The 25-year-old came into the match with career-best bowling figures of two wickets for 15 runs. She collected five wickets for 15 runs to set a new benchmark.
MAIDEN WICKET FOR NZUZA
Luyanda Nzuza, who celebrated her maiden T20I wicket in the match, finished with one wicket for 19 runs in four overs. Ayanda Hlubi, Eliz-Mari Marx, and Seshnie Naidu also claimed a single wicket each.
Nyasha Gwanzura came out all guns blazing in Zimbabwe's chase. The opener swung at everything, and Zimbabwe reached 29 for four after the powerplay on the strength of her runs. She scored 28 of them. The 30-year-old was trapped lbw by Eliz-Mari Marx on the last ball of the powerplay. Beloved Biza, the third wicket to fall, literally fell on her wicket, and her dismissal summed up Zimbabwe's campaign so far in the series.
However, the star of the innings was Michelle Mavunga. The 21-year-old thrilled the crowd with a punchy 41 from 23 balls. Mavunga, who came with a high score of 21, is another player who recorded a new career-best score. She shared a 51-run eighth-wicket partnership with Loryn Phiri (14).
South Africa have now taken a 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Wolvaardt and company will have their attention set on a series whitewash, a quest that will begin with another win in their next contest. Zimbabwe and South Africa will play their fourth T20I on Thursday, 17 September.
