A brilliant all-round performance from Duan Jansen and a strong half century from Keegan Petersen led the Momentum Multiply Titans to a thrilling two-wicket win over World Sports Betting Western Province in their CSA One-Day Cup match at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.
It was an exciting low scoring affair, after a maiden list A half century in his second match for Western Province from youngster Oliver Whitehead helped them to 220 all out batting first.
Dayyaan Galiem, 3-51, Jansen, 3-45, and part timer Neil Brand, 2-51, led a strong bowling performance from the Titans, but they will be frustrated after they allowed the visitors to reach what almost turned out to be a defendable score after having them in deep trouble on 94-6.
In response the home side was led by Petersen’s 71 off 101 balls (7x4; 1x6), but in the end they needed to get bailed out by Jansen, after he came in as the No 9 batsman and struck a fantastic unbeaten 45 off 51 balls (6x4), to get them over the line for a tight win.

Western Province spinner Kyle Simmonds single handedly dragged his team into the contest by picking up figures of 4-34 in 10 overs as he decimated the Titans middle order, but he didn’t receive enough support with Beuran Hendricks, 2-43, the next best contributor.
The Titans chase got off to a mixed start, as they lost both openers relatively cheaply but made decent early headway.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius (13) missed a booming drive and was bowled by Hendricks in the fifth over, which brought Petersen in with the score on 28-1.
Rivaldo Moonsamy, 33 off 37 (6x4), looked good up front, hitting a number of boundaries, but he was eventually undone in the 11th over by Hendricks, caught at backward point by Valentine Kitime leaving them on 52-2.
Petersen then received decent support from Lesego Senokwane, 36 off 40 (3x4; 1x6), as they combined for a 58-run third-wicket partnership to put them into the driving seat.
SIMMONDS STRIKES
But Simmonds turned the match on its head with a superb spell of bowling that saw him pick up four wickets, as the Titans tumbled from 110-2 to 149-7.
First Simmonds bowled Senokwane and trapped Brand LBW for a first-ball duck off successive balls in the 23rd over as the Titans slipped to 110-4.
He followed that up by bowling Keagan Lion-Cachet (8) in the 29th over and had Galiem (1) caught by David Bedingham at mid-on in the 31st over, with the hosts in trouble on 140-6.
It got worse in the 34th over when Andile Phehlukwayo (1) threw his bat at a widish ball from Whitehead and only ended up edging to keeper Kyle Verreynne.
But that brought Jansen in and along with Petersen they tried to fight back with a 29-run stand to get them into range.
Petersen’s impressive knock finally came to an end in the 42nd over when he made a mistake and pulled a short ball from Mthiwekhaya Nabe straight to Raeeq Daniels at deep fine leg, and at 178-8 the Titans were in massive danger.
But Junior Dala (12*) superbly stuck in with Jansen, as they produced an unbeaten match-winning 44-run ninth-wicket stand to lead the Titans to a breathless win with 12 balls to spare.
IN DEEP STRIFE
In the first innings it was a gritty half century from 21-year-old Whitehead, as he hit four boundaries and a six in his 55 off 67 balls, to drag his side over 200 and give their bowlers something to defend.
At the start of play the Titans won the toss and chose to bowl, and got off to a good start thanks to Jansen and Galiem.
In the second over Daniel Smith (8) flashed at a widish ball from Jansen and sent it straight to Senokwane at gully, and in the next Galiem got a ball to nip away from Kitime (8) to take the edge through to keeper Pretorius to leave them on 20-2.
David Bedingham, 33 off 27 (4x4), and Verreynne, 23 off 33 (2x4), then looked to revive the innings with a positive 56-run partnership.
But just as they were looking to get on top, both fell within four balls, as first Bedingham flicked Dala off his hips straight to Petersen at deep backward square leg, followed by Verreynne popping Lizaad Williams to Lion-Cachet at midwicket as they slipped to 78-4.
Another quick double strike then had Western Province in deep strife, as Mihlali Mpongwana (7) top edged Galiem towards deep midwicket where Williams took a superb catch running backwards over his shoulder, followed soon by Juan James (9) hitting Galiem straight to Senokwane at backward point.
But that brought Simmonds (20) in to join Whitehead and they initially stopped the bleeding with a 37-run stand, before Simmonds was caught by Dala off Brand with the score 131-7.
Whitehead then received valuable support from tailender Daniels, 23 off 34 (1x6), as they combined for the innings' biggest partnership of 67 runs.
But as had been the pattern for most of the innings, two quick wickets fell as Daniels was bowled by Brand and Whitehead was caught by Lion-Cachet off Jansen, leaving them on 208-9 with Hendricks (13*) and Nabe (5) adding 12 for the last wicket.
