Mitch van Buuren scored an outstanding unbeaten half-century to steer the DP World Lions to a six-wicket win (DLS) over WSB Western Province in their CSA One-Day Cup match at the Wanderers on Saturday.
The contest was disrupted by rain and lightning a couple of times. The first interruption occurred in the first innings.
Western Province, who won the toss and chose to bat first, were on 259-7 after 42 overs when the weather stopped play. The two sides lost overs and the Lions had a revised target of 264 runs in 39 overs.
The hosts managed their chase well and were on 245-4 when inclement weather interrupted play again. The Lions were five runs ahead of the DLS par score of 240 after 36 overs.
Van Buuren scored an unbeaten 88 from 76 balls. This is his 13th List A half-century. He faced 43 deliveries to reach the milestone.
The middle-order batter joined forces with Wiaan Mulder (30) in the 13th over. The Lions had just lost Zubayr Hamza (46) and Rassie van der Dussen (15) in seven balls and were in need of a consolidating partnership.
The duo forged an 83-run fourth-wicket partnership that kept the Lions in the contest. Mulder was content to hand the strike to Van Buuren, who was playing with more fluency than the Proteas all-rounder.
Their partnership gave way to Van Buuren's unbroken 76-run fifth-wicket stand with Connor Esterhuizen (39*).
Boundaries did not come easy for the duo, so they ran a multitude of twos to make up for the lack of fours and sixes.
Van Buuren's two partnerships with Mulder and Esterhuizen had two defining overs, the 22nd and the 35, which added a combined 28 runs to the total.
Western Province enjoyed moments of ascendancy with the ball, particularly when Kyle Simmonds had the ball in hand.
The spinner, who claimed a single wicket, delivered 31 dot balls in his eight-over spell that cost Western Province a meagre 22 runs. He was also Western Province’s most successful bowler.
BEDINGHAM TON
Van Buuren’s unbeaten half-century eclipsed David Bedingham’s sensational century earlier in the day.
Bedingham finished the match with 103 runs from 93 balls (11X4s, 3X6s). This is Bedingham's eighth List A century and he faced 91 deliveries to get to the milestone.
Bedingham shared a fruitful 78-run second-wicket partnership with Tony de Zorzi that set the visitors up for a competitive total.

Codi Yusuf and Nqaba Peter also took a brace of wickets apiece, but conceded runs at a higher economy rate than Fortuin.
