FROM AVOLA THROUGH HUNGARY, TO VERONA

When the riders take to the starting line on Friday 6th May, they will mark the start of the 105th edition of the Giro d’Italia, affectionately known as La Corsa Rosa.

The 22 team Grande Partenza [Grand Depart/Start] will spend three days of racing in Hungary - 2 years later than initially planned - before returning to the streets of Italy. The race will conclude with an Individual Time Trial on the final stage in Verona on the 29th of May.

THE ROUTE

The race begins with a 195km-long opening flat stage, as 184 cyclists will look to lay a solid foundation for the 21 stage three-week long journey through 3 445.6 kilometers of Italian roads; pedalling for the Maglia Rosa honors come the chequered flag in Verona.

As we have seen in previous races, the Italian grand race will see week three putting the riders to the sword, with a mammoth 5 days in the mountains. This is undoubtedly where the victor shall rise to the fore, as the rest of the field will have to settle for groomsman roles.

WHAT IS ON THE LINE?

MAGLIA ROSA

It’s been the leader’s jersey since 1931. A world icon. A page made of pink fabric, where the history of cycling has been written over the past 90 years. It’s the dream of every child who starts riding a bicycle. It’s the dream of every rider taking to the start of the Giro d’Italia every year.

MAGLIA AZZURRA

Unsurprisingly, the best climber’s jersey is as blue as the sky.Because when you’re pushing to the KOM and you feel that strength is failing, the blue sky above becomes your guiding light, your aim, the goal that keeps you going. And a patch of sky will be the reward.

MAGLIA CICLAMINO

Awarded to the leader of the points classification, this jersey is usually a sprinters’ thing.Flashing as a powerful sprint, yet as gentle as hope, it bears the colour of a fall-blooming flower. It represents the determination and grit it takes to be at the front every time, at each intermediate sprint, at each bunch sprint, to and through the final stage.

MAGLIA BIANCA

The jersey for the best young rider is white, just like the sum of all colours. It holds all hopes and dreams. It is, at once, a prize and a wish. A blank page for a new, exciting chapter to be written.

TEAM CLASSIFICATION

Although there is no Jersey for the Team Classification award, there is a strong competition each year for the red labelled numbering as the peloton competes to finish the entire race in the quickest combined time, come the finish line in Verona.
