Poels ends drought by winning Tour of Andalusia
Wout Poels won only the second stage race of his career when he protected his narrow lead on the fifth and final day of the Tour of Andalusia on Sunday.
German breakaway specialist Lennard Kamna of Bora-Hansgrohe won the stage, a hilly 146km ride from Huesa to Chicana de Segura, outlasting the other members of his small group.
Dutchman Poels was shepherded home by his Bahrain-Victorious teammates in the main peloton, one minute 33 seconds back, to defend the lead he took the day before.
Poels finished 14 seconds ahead of Spaniard Cristian Rodriguez of TotalEnergies in the overall standings
The 34-year-old Dutchman had only won one stage race in his career, the nearby Tour of Valencia in February 2016. That was the year he won his solitary classic, Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
