Guinea’s head coach Kaba Diawara expressed confidence in his chosen team as they prepare to take on Gambia in their next Group C match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The two nations will face off at the Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro on Friday evening.

Kick-off is at 10pm CAT (SA, GMT+2).

CURRENT FORM

The National Elephants drew their first Afcon match against Cameroon 1-1 and a win will be needed to keep their dream of qualifying for the next round alive.

As for the Scorpions, the team is still licking their wounds after being defeated 3-0 by reigning champions Senegal and will be looking to improve in this next encounter.

TEAM NEWS

Guinea captain François Kamano will be sitting this one out as he is suspended after receiving a red card in the match against Cameroon.

Serhou Guirassy missed the first match due to injury and might be doubtful to feature in this match unless he has recovered on time.

Gambia’s Ebou Adams was also sent off in their first match against Senegal and will also be watching from the sidelines.

WHAT WAS SAID?

Guinea head coach Diawara emphasised the familiarity and cohesion within the team and his reliance on the young talent within his squad.

"We have high ambitions for this competition. Our team has been in the making for the past two years, and this will be my second Afcon experience," Diawara was quoted.

"I aim to win. When we undertake a task, we must do it well. We have a young team, and we are placed in a group that includes former champions."

Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet reckons none of their fancied opponents will be relishing going up against his side.

"I'm aware that it will be tough to repeat what we did two years ago. It is a group of death but I don't think any of them are pleased about the prospect of going up against us," Saintfiet said.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Serhou Guirassy: Should the striker be declared fit to play on Friday, he will pose a big threat in Guinea’s attack as he is currently the second-highest goal-scorer in the German Bundesliga with 17 goals to his name.

Ali Sowe: Following the loss to Senegal, Sowi, who was given the go-ahead in the attack in Gambia's most recent game, will be hoping to go one better and score against Guinea.
