Guinea coach Kaba Diawara has said that his side will work on scoring more goals ahead of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia on Monday night.
Kick-off is at 9:00pm (SA, GMT+2)
The two nations met at the Stade Mohammed V stadium last week as Guinea marched to a 2-0 win in the Group D encounter.
While Ethiopia held most of the ball, it was Guinea who made the most of their goal scoring chances, as efforts from Francois Kamano and Mohamed Bayo were enough for the home side to secure maximum points.
As it stands, Guinea currently occupy second spot in Group D, level on points (6) with Egypt who lead the way.
In view of the game ahead, Diawara felt that his side could have scored more goals in the first game and that they will work on converting their chances.
“We had two games to play against Ethiopia. So four halves,” Diawara said.
“There we come two to do two halves and we must immediately prepare for the next match. We would have liked to score more goals because we know how to create several chances.
“Going in at halftime with 2 or 3 goals to make the game easier for us. So we have to concentrate again.
“We will continue to work on the offensive animation and I hope that this 2-0 will serve as a trigger for our next matches.”
The defeat saw Ethiopia plummet to the bottom of their group, winning one out of their last three 2023 Afcon qualifiers.
Historically, Ethiopia struggled during Afcon qualifiers, claiming two wins out of their last five matches, while recording three losses during this period.
As the hosts, Ethiopia are unbeaten on their own patch since January 2022. However, The Walia Ibex claimed just two wins in eight games since then.
Speaking ahead of the tie, Yihun Endshaw spoke fondly of representing his country and that he receives a special kind of happiness while playing for Ethiopia.
“One of the successes for all players is playing for the national team and wearing the jersey,” Endshaw said.
“Playing for the National Team gives you special happiness rather than playing for club.”
