Stellenbosch have moved swiftly to fill the vacancy left by the departure of top striker Iqraam Rayners and on Tuesday announced the signing of Ashley Cupido from Cape Town Spurs.

The club have also added former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Onyango to their roster, some 24 hours before they meet the champions in their MTN8 semifinal first leg tie.

Cupido’s move involves a swop for Stellenbosch teenager Mervin Boji, who goes in the other direction and joins Spurs in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The 23-year-old Cupido scored seven goals for Spurs in the Premiership last season but it was not enough to help keep the club up.

He also played for South Africa in the recent Cosafa Cup in Gqeberha.

He featured on Sunday as Spurs began their campaign back in the second tier with a 0-0 draw at University of Pretoria but now makes the move down the N1 to Stellenbosch.

Boji scored for Stellenbosch on Saturday in their 5-0 win over Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini in the second leg of their African Confederation Cup first round tie.

Last season he made 16 substitute appearances in the Premier League but did not start a game.

Kenya international Onyango, 30, was released by Sundowns at the end of last season after having helped them win the African Football League.

He was back-up defender for much of his time at the champions who he joined in 2020.

In the preceding season, Onyango had been without a club for 12 months after a serious knee operation saw him leave Maritzburg United.

He stayed on to continue with his rehabilitation after losing most of the cartilage in his knee.

“Brian is a player who has enjoyed great success during his career and we are looking forward to adding his experience and winning mentality to our squad,” Stellenbosch chief executive officer Rob Benadie said.

“He has been brought in to bolster our defensive line and we have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution towards both our domestic and continental ambitions.”
