Royal AM fought back to hold Cape Town City to a 1-1 draw in a Betway Premiership match played at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result saw Thwihli Thwahla start their league campaign with a draw and they will travel to Pretoria where they will face three-time PSL Premiership champions SuperSport United on 21 September.

The Citizens, on the other hand, will be left to rue conceding late against Royal.

City will turn their attention to their iKapa Derby clash against Stellenbosch FC scheduled to be played on 25 September.

The Citizens got off to the perfect start, breaking the deadlock as early as the eighth minute. Jaedin Rhodes set up Prins Tjiueza, who netted with a lovely finish to hand City a 1-0 lead.

The visitors did take the foot off the pedal after taking the lead and Darwin Gonzalez was just unlucky as his effort hit the upright in the 43rd minute.

The score was 1-0 City at halftime.

Lesotho international Sera Motebang, who scored against Central African Republic last week, was introduced six minutes into the second half as Royal looked to fight back and level matters.

It proved to be a good decision by coach John Maduka as Motebang grabbed a late equalising goal in the 84th minute, with substitute Sabelo Radebe providing the assist. Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
